About the show

I am the voice of Sleepy Wisdom, a free podcast of long, slow stories for bedtime. The episodes are long, slow documentaries on Stoicism, philosophy, psychology and history, told in one steady voice: my favourite true stories, the ones that have shaped my life, with their resilience, their meaning and purpose, and the hidden wisdom in them. Every episode is made to be played low at bedtime.

Play one low, so that you have to lean in slightly to catch it. A voice that is too loud becomes company, and company keeps you awake. It is not a treatment. It is a cue, like the lamp going off. Set the phone across the room, with the screen face down and well away from the bed.

The book

If you would rather have the old ways themselves, written down plain, my book, Grandpa Huxley's Old Sleep Manual, is a 468-page PDF, set out by the trouble you have tonight, not by century. It is not a promise of sleep. The most I will say for any way in it is that it may help.
